Residency
1111 Residency welcomes artists to live and work in Budapest for at least one month. Our aim is to put local values and issues into a global context and provide a platform to convey international trends. Facilitating discourse between local and international artists is of utmost importance.
This open call is for art practitioners working in the field of visual arts in its broadest sense. A panel of experts will select artists based on the professional excellence of the applicant’s work.
The main purpose of the residency program is to provide a possibility for artists to explore current issues, such as ecology, urbanism, politics, history and other social questions, in the context of the CEE-region, Hungary and Budapest. Our residents are introduced to the city and its art scene, in a personalized, professional program arranged by our team.
As 1111 Residency is a practice-based programme, the residents have the opportunity to develop new artworks and projects. Through our help, the selected artists are able to collaborate with local professionals, are aided with research, and cooperate with curators and organisations related to their developing projects. We encourage interdisciplinary projects and experimental practices. We offer a gallery space for the final works, but we support other models of presentations beyond exhibition, including workshops, lectures, performances or community-based projects.
Living and working conditions
The residency apartment is located near the Danube bank at Pozsonyi Street, in a vivid, young neighbourhood. It is full of cafes, restaurants and shops, and is near the city center. There are various transportation opportunities (tram, bus, subway) and a bicycle also comes with the apartment. The flat has one bedroom, a living room and a small balcony, and is suitable for one or two people.
The studio is located near Bartók Béla Boulevard at Kende Street, on the Buda side. This is one of most developing, bright and lively surroundings in Budapest and is full of art galleries, bars, cafes and also green areas. In 2020 this neighbourhood was selected as one of the 50 coolest neighbourhoods in the world by Time Out. The studio is suitable for various disciplines, such as writing, painting and sculpting.
